a brief review to make you all jealous ;)
the evening started with an in-store from ganger. this was my first time seeing them live, and i was totally impressed. later they were more impressive with an actual pa ;)
during their 45min. opening set they did the three songs from the in-store plus two more. unfortunately i'm not one to remember names, so i can't tell you exactly what was played. i can only say that they were fantastic and impressed the crowd who undoubtedly never heard of them before. they left me wanting more.
on the other hand, although mogwai were unspeakably incredible, they played much longer than i expected or my ears could stand (even with protection, and i'm no lightweight). it is possible that it was their longest show ever at 99 minutes. they think so anyway. funny thing is that they were considering two more songs!
it was very interesting for me to see them now after seeing them for the first time two years ago. the expansion of sound has increased dramaticly. i don't remember this sheer power the first time. it might have something to do with the bass heavy pa at metro (surely the cause of my head trauma) compared with the relatively flat pa at the much smaller lounge ax. but i believe the added fellows and their own soundman contributed a lot as well.

metro was not sold out (cap.900), but probably due to good press, it was a well attended show at start. i think quite a few of those folks didn't know what they were in for because, by the end, it had thinned out considerably. i do think they'll get a lot bigger over here though. like the uk this is what the kids long for in these days of post-mbv, post-slint, etc. i just hope that popularity doesn't dampen their creativity like it has to so many in the past.

and everybody was so nice! what a swell bunch of folks :)

    thanks, aadam!

mogwai (as was ganger) was joined onstage during "mogwai fear satan" and "like herod" by a second drummer. he was a young black gentleman who really played well. he played counter to what bionic played and it really sounded incredible.

mogwai were fucking unreal. they played 100m. and this was without an encore.
where "miami" or "atlanta" should read on their tourbus, it reads "this is home." stuart wore a hat that said "i love jesus" the whole day. a man yelled out "show me your tits mate" and stuart pulled down his shirt. "stanley kubrick" has stuart playing a beautiful slide part. the best show that i have ever seen. they deserve all the accolades they work for. an amazing band. go see them.

    thanks!

'summer' was the highlight for me, with stuart really kicking up the distortion on his guitar. and of course, 'herod' blew away everyone there. the crowd sucked though. half of 'em seemed like they didn't even know who the hell mogwai was, and during 'herod', most of the crowd had their fingers in their ears to deaden the sound. wimps! i just let my ears bleed and loved it!!!!!!
