    reviews/comments

    from mauricio barrón:

it was an amazing night. the place is the lobby of an old building in the center of mexico city, some tall glass-like ceiling, very nice. during mogwai's soundcheck, things got so noisy that some pices of the ceiling were cracking...honest! doors opened at around 8:30 pm. the opening band, austin tv, dressed up with in black and white with rabbit masks and tails came out and were great, the gwai guys came out to watch them play and cheered a lot. after them some guys with blue overalls came to get the gear ready. at around 11 pm, the team beast was ready to rumble. they were also wearing the blue overalls with the "team beast" legend on the back, some of them were also wearing rabbit tails borrowed from the austin tv guys (pretty cool!!!).

the sound was fantastic and "mogwai fear satan" just kicked the 1500 people packed in the place right in the face! it was amazing!!! after that stuart said greeted everyone in his new mix of spanttish/sconish and introduced the next song as "amigo de la noche". 'friend of the night' was great although barry had some trouble with the piano at the middle of the song and had to switch to the fender rhodes for the rest of it.

"acid food" and "hunted by a freak" were great, actually the latter seemed to be most popular with the crowd. then came 'travel is dangerous', it's one of those songs you think you like but you haven't "really" heard it until you hear it live...wow!!! after playing it stuart said something like "yesterday we came here by plane, and there was some turbulence, and we discovered that travel is...dangerous"...all the other guys just looked at him with "?" faces hehehehe.

then came the "i love those songs but i don't think they'll play 'em tonite" section of the concert. "ithica 27-9" was amazing, the distortions in that song were just unbelievable, i think i saw one or two people flying off the roof during the song. then was "yes! i am a long way from home", one of my all times favourites with those two basses playing at full power, great song!! 'ratts of the capital' ended this section with barry showing off his multi-instrumetalist talents (piano, then guitar, then bass, then guitar), great song!.

'glasgow mega snake' was next, my fucking shit what the fuck were they thinking when they wrote that song!!! superb!!!! next one: '2 rights make 1 wrong'...there was a guy in the crowd with a sign asking for the song, wish granted! there was one of those 70's disco style crystal balls on the ceiling which made the atmosphere amazing during that song...like a prom dance! hehehehehe. then 'helicon 1' with dominic on guitar and stuart on bass...it looked as if martin wanted to destroy his drum kit...great song!! finally 'we're no here', barry playing the initial riff over and over, then everyone joined him...noisy noisy!!

they left the stage and came back with "my father my king" 20 minutes of pure madness to end with some brutal noise layers and all the guys kicking the shit out of their guitars, stuart's guitar actually had two broken strings by the end of the song...some brutal sounding layers and layers of noise courtesy of john who stayed till the end just messing around with his effects and guitar...far beyong real!!.

it was an amazing show, so much more than i had expected, i think more than everyone (including mogwai) expected and now it's too bad it's ended. stuart promised they'd come back sometime in the next tour ...

    cheers lads!!
