mogwai @ the falcon, lincoln |
17/05/1996 |
(unknown. if anyone can help with this, please e-mail rob.)
supporting urusei yatsura
from james melley:
the gig was held in a tiny shit hole of a
pub called the falcon. it was my first ever gig, i'd never heard of
mogwai but was going to see the lovely yatsura, having heard the sublime
Kernal on the radio. I went with a couple of friends and we all got
copies of the tour 7" (Fergus Yatsura looked bemused as hordes of music
starved lincoln residents rushed to grab the 7"s off him). So a
relatively slim line mogwai opened the night, all with bleached blonde
hair, if i remeber correctly. Thinking about it i can only acctually
remeber 3 members of the group last night. Given the size of the venue,
and the fact no one was there to see them, they played a stormer. 4 or 5
songs long, one of which was definately summer. I only know this because
i had the riff stuck in my head for weeks and i couldnt work out what it
was, but then i listened to the tour 7" and the rest is history.
Yatsura were terrible incidentally, not their fault, but the fact that
there was only one mic and every time Graham opened his mouth a shriek
of feed back emerged. They (the Yats) played a fantastic gig in Lincoln
the following year, however. mogwai still have'nt returned, but then if
i had a choice neither would i. Still it was a pretty rock'n'roll way to
lose my gig virginity. It was only 1 quid to get in, but we spent the
whole night hiding from an over zealous land lord, who threatened to
kick us out if we didn't produce i.d. as i was only 16 at the time...
from patrick gray:
i was the promoter of this gig, and i thought you might like to know why it was such
a mad night, as the 100 or so punters squeezed in there never knew the full story...
the night was actually meant to be staged at grafton house, but we found ourselves
double-booked with a 'battle of the bands' and so had to move at the last minute. i
approached tony, the then-landlord of the falcon, who agreed to stage it, not quite
knowing what he'd let himself in for!! laurie bennett supplied the pa, but as he was
already supplying a lot of equipment for the 'battle of the bands' he brought his practice
pa, one speaker of which blew up in the soundcheck!
it was a strange gig for all these reasons, but the atmosphere was great
and everyone seemed to have a great time, including the bands, who still now remember it
fondly. some other interesting facts - both myself and lucy, the girl on the door, were
working at the ritz cinema at the time (i was deputy manager) and both lost our jobs as
a result of this night, as the vindictive manager changed our shifts at last minute
saying we had to work instead of doing the gig. however, we had the last laugh, as it began
a chain of events which, via an employment tribunal hearing, resulted in the following:
lucy went to see urusei in london the next night and ended up as graham's
girlfriend for the next six years! she now lives in glasgow where she is the pr manager
for glasgow barfly. sadly they split last year (lucy is now going out with the bass
player from aereogramme, graham works in fopp on byres road, djs with me once a month at
planet boo in glasgow and has a new, as yet nameless band)
i decided to set up planet boo as a full-time concern - after a year
doing nights in lincoln i moved down to london where i promoted at the
100 club, met my wife, moved north and now find myself right in the
thick of the scottish music scene! so all's well that ends well.
(by the way, i ended up losing =£60 on the night in the end! the joys
of promoting!!!!)
