    from joe dougan:

set opener 'xmas steps' was drowned out by the sound of an unsettled audience, who talked throught the whole opening section, and already the band seem digruntled. 'hunted by a freak' was the best performance of the night, quickly followed by 'you don't know jesus', perhaps 'rock action's best track, but again the audience are increasingly ruining it for the band, who already look like they've had enough.

old songs like 'ithica' and 'helicon 1' soar above the apathetic onlookers, but the band never seem to get into the whole thing fully, which made it much harder to enjoy the music. 'ratts of the capital' and '2 rights make one wrong' finish the set fantastically, while the encore, 'mogwai fear satan', ascends into a finale of sheer aural assault. a great set overall, but, according to the band, their worst ever audience. a shame really.

the show was wick [i had to ask - apparently this means bad but not shite - rob]. well, as wick as a 'gwai show can be. too much talking, and the band were obviously struggling with it. i really wish i hadn't gone, it spoiled the memories of so many fantastic gigs where the crowd listened and the band took over. in belfast the crowd were largely ignorant bastards. next time they play here, if they ever do again, it should be in the limelight or the empire. then again, belfast crowds are never anything to write home about. i spoke to a lot of people who were seeing mogwai live for the first time and they went away disappointed. i'm not in the least bit suprised.
