    reviews/comments

    from david:

i saw the band last night playing mogwai young team (and just that) at summercase in madrid. the gig was really good, i had not seen most of those songs live in a looong time, but the place was clearly not the best for something like that. the band seemed to enjoy it quite a bit though.

i'm pretty sure it was the album in correct order, though i haven't listened to it in ages! they didn't even have breaks in between songs, only the transition to and from the slower piano numbers was a bit rougher, but if it's true they didn't rehearse they did an amazing job for a first timer. my only complaint is the spoken bits were too low in the mix and you could barely hear them.

they had a 1-hour slot and that was it, no encore. in fact, as the last notes/feedback were still ringing music came on from the pa and the lights were turned up, that was annoying as they weren't even offstage yet. martin was wearing a sex pistols t-shirt which was funny, i wonder if he got to meet them old bastards backstage.

oh well, the festival was terrible, though the music got generally better the second day. it's funny, the first time i saw them live was at a festival too exactly 10 years ago (festimad), i didn't even know their music but they completely blew me away and i immediately bought the album.

by the way, the "small contingent from aberdeen in dayglo halos" (and sunglasses) mentioned in the nme blog were also present in madrid, seemed like they were friends of the band or at least knew them, it was kind of amusing.

    stuart interview [may 2008]

    http://www.drownedinsound.com/articles/3677868:

dis meets mogwai’s stuart braithwaite at the monorail vegan café and record store in glasgow’s king’s court. the band’s nominal frontman is surprisingly relaxed, given that he’s in the midst of remotely mastering the band’s latest album 'the hawk is howling' and admitting that the band hasn’t even considered rehearsals for the band’s two forthcoming 'don’t look back'-syle performances.

"we’ve been asked to do 'come on die young' for don’t look back (atp-curated album revival shows), and we didn’t fancy it," admits stuart. so why now, at summercase? any particular reason? "they just asked us very nicely," he states simply, knocking away suggestions that they were honoured by the request. "no, it was not really flattering. we just thought, ‘let’s do it’." not that he has anything against the like of sonic youth, belle & sebastian et al performing on the ever-growing run of the successful series: "i think it’s good because it’s done in that way that’s kinda completist. it’s better than seeing bands who are doing greatest hits set." besides, he adds, "we’re not going to trawl around the world for four years doing it, plus there’s only three or four songs we’ve never played off it."
