    from andrew sayer:

last night at a (more busy than 2 years ago) academy, mogwai came on stage bang on 9.30 pm to the melodic grace of 'yes.. i am a long way from home', quite apt considering my 3 & 1/2 hr drive down from the north east. the expected 'friend of night' & 'precipice' followed to an eager appreciative audience.

then martin had his 'mini-break' (understandable considering..) for 'kubrick' & 'blow up your school'. this was followed by a pummelling 4 song barage of 'hunted by freak' 'scotlands shame' 'xmas steps' & 'jim morrison'. seriously intense soulful music that does stuff to my brain no drug ever could (never smiled so much since the last gig!)

then the calm restraint of 'cody' & 'space expert' allowed the manc crowd to let themselves down with needless persistent talking & random shouts. stuart laughed it off & talked about star-wars t-shirts (as last time here) to finish off with 'an uptempo feedback frenzied '2 rights make 1 wrong'. this totally complimented the new lights show.

the encore started with 'herod' but barry sufferred a string break and took a couple minutes out fixing this problem. this gave john time to let rip on his 12 string. even with barry back he kept shaking his head... eventually the song was edited down in length & morphed into 'batcat'.

well.. what can you say. a good 20 odd times for me now & these guys just continue to impress, exhilarate, seduce and most importantly improve & invigorate music like no-one out there.
