'planet pop' festival overview (not all of the bands mentioned played on the same day as mogwai)
the independent newspaper (6th sept 1996)

john peel favourites the delgados and uresei yatsura played with the self-deprecatory confidence of stars in the making, while edinburgh power poppers chicane also look set to be the ones most likely to. but there were others just as enticing, making sounds from more oblique, off-kilter angles. appendix out must be the quietest band ever, while cupid mount etna come on like jonathan richman backed by the fall. top honours, though, must go to mogwai and the mongers. mogwai's immense bass-driven drones could've been released by factory 15 years ago, while the mongers' left- field, exploratory instrumentals are ever so slowly edging toward fully fledged strangeness.

further comment from neil cooper (april 2009):

mogwai were third on the bill (can't remember who was headlining). i knew the name already, cos i'd seen posters round glasgow for shows, and liked the name. i also remember watching them do an all instrumental set, complete with glockenspiel, and thinking they were bloody brilliant, but that instrumental music would get them nowhere...with the beast known as post-rock being just around the corner and all, what the hell did i know.

my all too brief mention of the show in my independent review was quite possibly the first mention of mogwai anywhere in the press, although i'm willing to be proved wrong.
