please tell us
if you have any mogwai news or rumours that are not
reported here.
there will be no brightlight! updates for the next week or two. the reason for this? my lame excuse??? well, the reason is that i am moving to university tommorrow, and although i know i will have internet access, i'm not sure when i will have it... but whatever happens, bl! will keep this url. and it is for this same reason that i will be unable to reply [or even read!] any e-mails you send me for a week or so... sorry. well, if anyone is intersted, i'm off to stafford university to study software engineering. if any mog' fans are there, or near there, then please drop me a line! apologise again for the inconvineince, but i will get back to regular updates as soon as humanly possible. love, thos.
oh yes. oh yes oh yes oh yes. i saw mogwai play here in kettering on tuesday, and they were fantastic. despite looking a tad nervous when they first walked on, they soon managed to scare a couple of thousand manics fans shitless. excellent. i managed to grab a word or two with stuart and mr johnstone after the show. [thankyou both for taking time to talk to me!]. stuart gave me some interesting info which, being the kind bloke that i am, i shall pass onto you... firstly, mogwai have a new split-single coming out on guided missile records in december [nov?] time. i can't remember who else is on it, but i think there are about 2 or 3 other bands, and one of them has a long complicated spanish name - you know the one i mean! and, if i understood stuart correctly, he said that it was "all electronicy" - sounds cool to me! being the information parasite that i am i also asked stuart about the new album. i think he said they have about seven songs almost done, but they are still writing and practicing a lot of stuff. stuart said they will be going across to america in november to record some material with some bloke out of mercury rev [i think!]. 'kappa', 'spoontest', 'country' and 'ex-cowboy' will all be on the album, and if they manage to clear it so will 'helps both ways' - but, regrettably, stuart said that if it does make it onto the album the madden commentry will probably be lost, which is a great shame cos it sounded ace. the overall sound of the album is said to be a lot "flatter", with much less "quiet-loud-quiet-loud" bits - 'ex-cowboy' will be the albums "loud song". it should be released "early next year sometime", and i for one cannot wait!!! and some good news for you american fans! while the guys are recording in the states in november time they will probably be playing some live dates too!!! cool.
oh dear oh dear oh dear. there seems to have been something of a fuck up in the land of mog'. what the hell am i talking about? well, i got an e-mail from mr johnstone yesterday regarding the american "4 satin". it went a little something like this... As for the american "4 satin", it should not be encouraged. the wrong master tape was sent over to the US and an initial run of around 200 had a shit, older version of 'stereo dee' on it and another song that mogwai at the time judged to be too bad to be released. these were never supposed to see the light of day because they are pish. so there y'go. thanks mr johnstone for putting the record straight!
the american issue of "4 satin" has been released. it contains an extra, seemingly "previously un-released" track, and a different mix of 'stereo dee'. more detailed info as and when i get it...
bad news i'm afraid. stuart apparently told "one of my correspondants" [oooh, that sounds dodgy...] at the recent gig in aberdeen that there will be no new mogwai records released this year... noooooooooo! stuart did have some good news to soothe the pain a little tho. he confirmed that they will be playing at sound city in newcastle, 28-31 october. which is nice. thanks to the ever-wonderful marceline for this.
a new mogwai session will be broadcast on john peel's radio 1 show next tuesday night [1/9]. i know there have been at least 2 false reports of such a thing happening on this site in the past, but this news is from the emperor himself, so it must be true. maybe.
according to the "new releases" list on the rough trade web site, 'ten rapid' has just been released on vinyl. cool.
i just thought i'd let you know i've added some new cool stuff to the discography section. some releases, such as 'ten rapid', now have their own seperate pages with reviews etc. on. you will also find some tablature on there too!!! oh, and i'd just like to take this opportunity to appologise to dario pellarin and luc reverter who supplied with the tab ages ago - i'm really sorry it took so bloody long for me to add your hard work to the site!!! i have no excuses: i'm just crap.
despite what some people may have been saying [including actual employees at jetset], the only forthcoming release in the u.s. by jetset in the forseeable future will be the '4 satin' ep. so there. in the infinitely slim chance that any of you tried the new bl! web address within the last week, you will have noticed that it in fact did not work. that's because i'm dumb. i've had to change it, y'see, cos i put an "!" in it, and many programs do not appreciate it. so i changed it, and it actually works now. so come along to surf.to/brightlight and wonder at how it all looks exactly the same. the only difference is that the address is easier to remember. maybe.
more info about the german gig; and the support band in aberdeen has been changed. see the gigs section for more info.
bright light ! now has an unbelievably sexy new v3-url: http://surf.to/brightlight. the old url still works of course, but why the hell would you still want to use that eh? if you would like a free! v3-url, head along to surf.to.
the previously mentioned "secret gig" in norway has been confirmed. a gig in germany has also been announced. check the gigs page for more info.
i have heard rumours that mogwai might possibly be playing a "secret gig" in bergen, norway, on thursday august 13th. please note that this is totally unconfirmed!!!
i got a mail from mr johnstone today, and it read something like this: for each of the manics shows, we want to put around some mogwai postcards . . . to do this, we want to get some 'gwai fans into the shows. i don't want to be swamped (we should be so lucky!) with e-mails, so i've asked people to leave their e-mail addresses on the chemikal underground noticeboard. so, if you can help the man out, head along to the cu site. go on! you know it's the right thing to do!
the site has had a bit of a re-shuffle. all the info on forthcoming gigs will be put straight into the gigs section, which should hopefully make it much easier for you to find out if there are any gigs happening near you. actual gig news:
thanks to rob strong for this.
mogwai's recent gig at the roskilde festival in june will apparently be broadcast on both danish [dr-p3] and norwegian [p3] radio "sometime after september". thanks to tomm anders eriksen for this.
mogwai have confirmed a couple more festivals they are playing in europe this august:
according to the nme website mogwai are going to be supporting the manic street preachers on their forthcoming tour. now, this probably sounds as weird to you as it does to me, but any extra chance to see the lads live has gotta be a good thing, right? anyway, here's the dope:
so, mogwai are playing in my home town? i can't believe it!!!
mogwai also revealed a couple of upcoming uk live dates on mary-anne hobbs' show. they are:
ok, so it may be almost a week late, but, well, i've been i'll lately... [everybody say "ahhh!"]. anyway, i'm nearly better now, so i'll stop the sympathy vote! [grin] mogwai's set on mary-anne hobbs' show last week was magical. they played three tracks in all:
the first track is the one which is going to replace 'helps both ways' on the "no education..." ep, the second, 'kappa', is brand new, and i guess it will be on the new album. and 'xmas steps' is, of course, the lead track on the "no education..." ep. in between the first two tracks a radio one "emergency tape" of bentley rythm ace came on because the guys were too quiet! so they had to re-start 'kappa', and stuart explained that when he heard they had to re-start he "dropped a guitar"!!! mogwai must be jinxed because this is the second time such an "emergrncy tape" incident has happened to them, but hey, at least the bentley rythm ace tape is better than the oasis one which came on during their peel set...
ok, so the peel session may have been a false report, but mogwai are definitely playing live into mary-anne hobbs' radio 1 show, tonight, during the "breezeblock" hour between 12:00 [midnight] and 01:00. they will play 3 songs and also have a little chat with mary-anne. big thanks to colin hardie and adam milford for this info.
despite what may have been reported here a couple of weeks ago, and read in the national press, mogwai will not be in session for john peel this thursday, and nor does it seem they will be until at least september time...
contrary to what was previously reported, jetset will not be releasing the "no education..." ep in the states. jetset will, however, be releasing the "4 satin" ep in the us within the next couple of months. cheers to colin hardie for the corrections, and sorry to everyone else i may have dissappointed...
