linky linky 07/03/1999

added some fresh links.

cody tracklist 07/03/1999

there have apparently been a couple of changes to the tracklist for "cody". it now goes something like this:

  • punk rock
  • cody [was 'country']
  • helps both ways [new lawyer-friendly version]
  • year 2000 non-compliant cardia
  • kappa
  • waltz for aidan
  • may nothing but happiness come through your door
  • punk rock / puff daddy ANTICHRIST
  • oh! how the dogs stack up
  • ex-cowboy
  • chocky
  • christmas steps [new version]

maybe.

thanks tom barnes for the info.

euromog 01/03/1999

mr johnstone has confirmed some new european gigs! check out the gigs section for the full info.

mogwai 4 peel idst 01/03/1999

march already? jesus christ...

anyway... mogwai kindof made an appearance in the first episode of john peel's new tv show on saturday - we got to see stuart enjoying a beer with peel and a couple of the delgados peeps...

oh, and i reckon i heard 'ithica' and 'summer [priority]' playing in the background of the program for a couple of seconds, but i may well be wrong...

mogwai + australia 25/02/1999

the following extract is from the feb 15-21 issue of an australian newspaper called "revolver" :

mogwai, from glasgow, have a new 70 minute masterpiece called "come on die young" recorded by mercury rev's dave friedman out through local indie spunk records in april and a very possible tour.

make of that what you will ...

thanks to seb for the info.

oooooooops! 25/02/1999

doh! grovelling apology time:

i know this is pointless telling you now that it has already happened, but mogwai were apparently guest dj's and played some tracks off of "CODY" on wnyu, new york uni's radio station, yesterday!

bollocks. and to make things even worse they even had a live web cast! doh! doh!

sorry everyone, esp. angie who sent me this over a week ago. i will surely burn in hell for this.

paradise motel remix 25/02/1999

it looks like the paradise motel single with the mogwai remix on that i mentioned a week or so back will finally be released on monday 1st march, still on infectious records.

the mogwai remix of 'drive' will apparently only be available on the b-side of the special edition 7" tho - and this is limited to only 500 copies!

those anxious to get a copy of the remix should note that it also appears on the 4-track cd promos of the single currently floating around...

happy hunting!

thanks to nick dyer for this.

interview added 22/02/1999

added a cool interview with mogwai conducted at the colchester arts centre last february. read it here.

thanks adam flood and rob strong.

[oh, and i also did some updates to the gigs section last week and forgot to tell anyone...]

mogwai to headline glastonbury 22/02/1999

although on the whole something of a dissappointment, the one cool piece of news to come out of the recent nme mog' chat was that they are going to be headlining at glastonbury this year!

yes, mogwai are set to headline the second stage on the sunday of this year's festival.

thanks to adam clark for reminding me about this were recording at tarboxroad studios i got a mail from michael farrington who had been to visit the band recording. he mentioned something about a split single with low - no fixed details or anything, but stuart was apparently on the phone to low to confirm the deal while michael was there...

so there you go. sorry everyone, esp. michael, that i never reported this closer to the time... you know me, i'm a bit crap like that.

mogwai / low split single ? 15/02/1999

i'm not sure how i let this one slip by, but as i was dredging through some old long-lost e-mail i came across something interesting...

while the 'gwai were recording at tarboxroad studios i got a mail from michael farrington who had been to visit the band recording. he mentioned something about a split single with low - no fixed details or anything, but stuart was apparently on the phone to low to confirm the deal while michael was there...

so there you go. sorry everyone, esp. michael, that i never reported this closer to the time... you know me, i'm a bit crap like that.

mogwai join forces with the gremlins ?!?! 15/02/1999

definitely a contender for the most bizarre mog' news so far:

in a deal drenched with irony, the 'gwai will be contributing two tracks, namely 'like herod' and 'r u still in 2 it [dj q mix]', as the in-game music to gremlin [ahem!] interactive's "actua ice hockey 2" playstation game, which should be released in april/may.

there will apparently be an article on the band in the may [april 20] issue of the "official playstation magazine", with possibly the 'r u still in 2 it [dj q mix]' given away on the cover cd.

big thanks to "craig m" for this [bizarre!] news.

promoting "cody" in the states 13/02/1999

in case anyone is wondering why mogwai seem to be flying out to new york for just one gig, it's because they're going to be there anyway. according to a recent interview stuart said they were going to be spending the end of february in the u.s. promoting the new album... so there you go.

cheerz rob strong.

bardo pond to support mog' in nyc 13/02/1999

bardo pond will apparently be the support for the mog's nyc gig on the 22nd of feb. i don't suppose anyone can afford to pay for a ticket to new york can they???

thanks to joe roth for posting aout this to the chemikal list.

mogwai in fanzine appearance 13/02/1999

kevin pickstock and friends have put out a fanzine called 'a cheery wave from stranded youngsters'.

the latest issue has interviews with the likes of mogul, spearming, caroline martin and, yes, mogwai. there's also a free limited [200] tape included which has tracks on from astronaut, bellatrix, mogul, hamish thrum and mj hibbett. all sounds cool to me. now i wonder if i'll get a free copy for doing this nice free advertising [smile]...

the whole thing costs £2 [plus 50p p&p, or equivalent IMO from your country with a bit extra to cover extra postage] and can be purchased from:

Al Maceachern, 6 Angotts Mead, Stevenage SG1 2NJ (UK)
[Concealed cash, or cheque / P.O. payable to "A.Maceachern"]

mail kev for more info.

mogwai "chat transcript 13/02/1999

well, the mogwai nme "chat" was something of a dissappointment to be honest. but if you never made it and want to know what was talked about there is apparently a transcript of the whole proceedings down at nme.com.

cheerz rob strong for posting about this to chemikal.

mogwai remixing in paradise 07/02/1999

mogwai have done a remix for the b-side of the paradise motel's new single, 'drive', which is a version of the cars' "classic". should be out, erm, soon [maybe tommorrow?] on infectious records.

cheerz to daniel lewry for posting this to the chemikal list.

mog' in select 07/02/1999

there's apparently a 4-page piece on our beloved mogwai in the newest issue of select magazine. thanks to rob orchard for posting this to the chemikal list!

live mog' chat at nme website 07/02/1999

mogwai will be doing a live chat at www.nme.com at 17:00 on thursday 11th february. be prepared for massive phonebills this quarter...

thanks to martin lewis, daniel lewry and, um, "whizz303" for that!

mog' on tv [again] 07/02/1999

mogwai are on channel 4's nme brats program again tonight, so if you missed last night's magnificient 'ithica 27-9', you better make sure you tune in tonight! [fingers crossed for a new tune!]

hello world 03/02/1999

the gigs section has been updated a bit, and i've finally got 'round to adding a list of all known available bootlegs to the trading section - sorry it took far too long!

gig in the u.s. confirmed 03/02/1999

mr johnstone has confirmed the rumoured stateside nyc gig on the 22/2. check out the gigs section. cheerz.

mog' on tv 02/02/1999

a song or two [ok, probably a song] from the mog's recent nme brats gig at the london astoria will be shown on channel 4 [uk] on saturday the 6th of february. [you'll just have to ignore the rest of the shite they'll play with it tho...].

it's alive! alive! 02/02/1999

just a quick note to say that bl! is finally back online. sorry for all the crap recently involving different servers etc., but certain ISPs have been putting me through some shit lately... anyway, i now have a new free ISP [public online] who seem to be cool, so hopefully everything is gonna be back to normal now. whew...

oh, and the update: i've added some more setlists and the european tour dates [late, i know] to the gigs section, and also updated the links section a little.

more new lp info 13/01/1999

rob strong brought to my attention that stuart brathwaite recently posted a message to the chemikal message board with some info about the new album, including a new revised track listing.

the new tracklisting bumps up the number of tracks from 8 to 12, and the length of the album from about 45 mins to around 70! sounds good to me. the tracklisting now reads something like this...

  • punk rock
  • cody [was 'country']
  • helps both ways [new lawyer-friendly version]
  • year 2000 non-compliant cardia
  • kappa
  • waltz for aidan
  • may nothing but happiness come through your door
  • oh! how the dogs stack up
  • ex-cowboy
  • chocky
  • christmas steps [new version]
  • punk rock / puff daddy ANTICHRIST

bad news for fans of 'spoontest' from the most recent peel session tho, because it seems that it will not be appearing on the new album, with stuart refering to it as "a dead beast". ah well, lets hope it pops up on some compilation or something in the future...

entitled "come on die young" [scottish gang phrase, like "young team"], the album will be released on march 29th on chemikal underground records in the uk, catalogue number CHEM033.

and the good news for u.s. fans is that matador have signed the 'gwai in the states and will be releasing the album on the same day as in the uk.

ie4 06/01/1999

oh dear. i've just noticed that microsoft internet explorer 4 seems to have problems viewing a lot of the gigography pages... shite. i've not noticed until now because up until recently i've been using netscape to view everything... oh dear. erm, i'll see what i can do about it, but i wouldn't wish the task of fixing this scale problem on my worst enemy...

sorry.

oslo gig? 06/01/1999

i've heard rumours that mogwai might be playing a gig in oslo, norway, on the 29th january. i've had no confirmation on this tho, so don't take my word for it. over to you mr johnstone...?

cheerz jrgen smeby and stefan harmsen.

i'm not ignoring you, honest 06/01/1999

if anyone has mailed me over the last couple of months and hasn't had any reply at all, i'm really sorry. my e-mail has been spread all over the place recently, so it's been a bit of a nightmare trying to reply to everything - especially if you used my old thos@arrakiss.demon.co.uk address, which is now completely dead. so if you do feel like you've been ignored please re-post your mail to my current [and hopefully permanent] address @ hj210289@stmail.staffs.ac.uk. thanks.

sorry about all this - i love you really.

mog' remix shocker 06/01/1999

according to stereo dee mogwai will be doing a remix for the b-side of the manics' new single, 'tsunami'. should be interesting...

cheerz davide.

new lp info 06/01/1999

first of all, i hope you all had a merry xmas and that 1999 will be a great year for you!

ok, onto business. i have some info about the forthcoming new album. speculating about release dates is always useless, but the best guesses are for a late feb, early march release... maybe.

still titled "come on die young", the track list currently runs something like this:

  • chocky
  • country *
  • [untitled]
  • ex-cowboy
  • xmas steps [re-recorded]
  • punk rock *
  • helps both ways [new lawyer-friendly version with different samples]
  • [untitled]

* = name will probably change.

thanks to the person who mailed me this first and whose mail i left at university [sorry]... and thanks to the ever-reliable rob strong for re-posting the info to me.

rob also passed on some extra info regarding non-album tracks recorded at tarboxroad. these are:

  • kappa
  • waltz [old track that should've been on "young team" but was forgotten!]
  • nick drake [fka 'o how the dogs stack up']
  • 6/4

extra musicians during the recording of the album were dave fridman, luke sutherland, richard formby and wayne myers.

cheerz rob!

new mog' member? 15/12/1998

davide gualandi reports on stereo dee that mogwai have a new full-time member, barry "HoBBit" burns. barry has been recording with the boys in the states and plays flute, piano and guitar on the album.

cheerz davide.

latest news from tarboxroad studios 14/12/1998

michael farrington recently visited tarboxroadstudios where mogwai are currently recording and passed on some interesting info to me.

it seems that 'xmas steps' will be on the new album, as this was the track they were recording when he visited.

also, for all you stuart fans, he has apparently just shaved his head... [but rumours that he only ever eats weetabix are totally unfounded].

cheerz michael.

new mog' site 14/12/1998

davide gualandi has set up a cool new mogwai web site at tinpan.fortunecity.com/appleway/842/. it even includes an ace chat area, so go check it out!!! [but please come back here afterwards, i get lonely y'know...]

warm-up gig announced 14/12/1998

there will be a warm-up gig for mogwai's london astoria brat gig at the colchester arts centre on friday 22nd january.

thanks to rob strong for the info, and colin hardie for the confirmation. cheerz guys.

recording in the u.s. 27/11/1998

for those who didn't know, mogwai are currently in the states recording their new album with dave friddman from mercury rev. you can keep track of their progress at the tarbox road studios website.

thanks to brian gebhardt for the website link.

couple of u.s. gigs in trouble 27/11/1998

a couple of the dates on the u.s. mini-tour seem to be in trouble.

first up, the gig today in cambridge, ma, will not be happening at the middle east club because of damage caused by a fire at the weekend. a new venue is trying to be organised. anyone who can help sort out a new venue should email jon l. as soon as pos.

secondly, the gig in toronto at the horseshoe on the 2nd of december is also in danger of not happening because of "suspected trouble at the border which the 'gwai didn't want to contend with". thanks to mike for this info.

warm-up gig announced 27/10/1998

mr johnstone posted a message on the cu message board a couple of days ago stating that mogwai are going to play a one-off gig in glasgow as a warm-up for the upcoming american dates.

the gig will be on the 1st of november at nice'n'sleazy's - a venue with a capacity of 160. tickets will go on sale on "wednesday morning" at 09:00 from the wellington st and great western road branches of missing records, and will cost £5.00 each.

oh yeh, and i've just added a load more set-lists and reviews to the gigs section - cheerz rob [and everyone who sent him stuff]!

updates 23/10/1998

i've just updated the gigs and links sections a little. go take a look!

miracle recovery??? 21/10/1998

brightlight! finally awakes from it's slumber! tho it was definately getting a bit close there...

sorry that this update has taken such a long time to do, and thanks to everyone who kept checking back during bl!s inactive period - it was still getting over 400 hits a week!!! cool.

this update wasn't meant to take this long to do, but circumstances made it so: thanks to the lovely network technicians at my new university, my internet access is pretty severely restricted from behind a firewall, which is making ftp'ing very hard to do [but luckily not impossible!!!]. so updating the site is now quite a long-winded task, which means that the updats will probably not be happening quite as often as they used to - although when they do, they will hopefully be more significant as i'll try to do things in bulk. i'm really sorry about this, but please stick by me - i'll try my best!!!

ok, since the last update i have obviously moved to university, and i'm now shacked up in my top-secret staffordshire bunker. since moving here i have managed to blag my way into another mog' gig [thanx simon!!!], this time at trentham gardens. the gig was fantastic, but marred by some tosser manics fans - but the 'gwai never gave into them, and they retaliated in gorgeous style... incredible stuff.

but enough about me and what i've been doing! on with the important stuff...

just as i was preparing to do this update, mr johnstone's latest semi-regular mogwai newsletter popped into my mailbox - good timing! a brief summary of the newsletter runs something like this:

  • the band are off to the usa in november to record their new album with dave friddman [mercury rev?]. the album is provisionally titled "come on, die young", and should be released in the first quater of 1999. coool!
  • mogwai will be playing at newcastle riverside on october 29th as a part of radio one's "sound city". they go onstage at 01:20 [morning!] and the gig will be broadcast live on radio 1. this will be their last uk date this year.
  • some u.s. gigs are also planned for november and december.
  • a previously unreleased mogwai track, 'i can't remember', will appear on a limited double 7" entitled "the glasgow ep". this will be released on november 30th by guided missile records.
  • this weeks 'nme' [the sound city issue] has a cover-mounted cd on it which contains another previously unreleased mogwai track, called 'i don't know what to say'.
  • 'a cheery wave from stranded youngsters' will appear on the cover-mounted cd of the november issue of 'select' magazine.

if you want more detailed information [including the u.s. dates!!!] you can read mr johnstone's newsletter here.

erm, that's all for now. thanks again for everyone sticking by me through all of this crap, i really appreciate it. oh, and if anyone would like to e-mail me [for some strange reason...] then they should use my "new" uni address: hj210289@stmail.staffs.ac.uk. thanks!

love,

thos.
