before barry 03/04/06

an amusing anecdote from richard moreton:

i recorded mogwai's recent live radio 1 performance at maida vale and stuck a cd of it on ebay (without any mark-up i might add - just enough to cover costs!). needless to say, before long barry had contacted ebay and asked them to remove it.

knowing he was monitoring mogwai stuff, i decided to wind him up by knocking together a quick jpeg of an 'imaginary' t-shirt in the 'blur: are shite' style saying 'mogwai: were good before barry burns joined' and listing it on ebay for a fiver, never expecting it to actually sell.

i had two enquiries from ordinary punters who wanted to buy it, but the biggest surprise came when martin bulloch contacted me and said that he thought it was really funny and he wanted four for him, stuart, dominic and john to wear on stage one night (without barry's prior knowledge).

so i made the shirts and it all came to fruition at the wolverhampton gig on friday night, although for some reason john wasn't wearing his. don't know whether they'll wear them again at any point.

i haven't heard yet what barry thought of the whole thing!

if you have any decent photos from the wolverhampton show, please get in touch.

arthur's back 11/03/06

the long-running saga of the sessions for legendary producer arthur baker's 'the one that got away' album continues...

back in 1999, various members of mogwai contributed to this still-unreleased album (more details can be found on the collaborations page of the discography). on monday (20th march), 'glow' (arthur baker feat. tim wheeler) is released as a single on various formats. apparently this track features stuart braithwaite on guitar, although whether his contribution has survived the extensive remixing programme remains to be seen.

http://www.recordstore.co.uk/underwater/ has all three formats available to pre-order, with the added bonus of entry into a competition to win signed artwork.

'friend of the night' video and site updates 26/02/06

the 'friend of the night' video (originally slated for inclusion on the cd single released last month) has been played on mtv2, and a streaming version has been added to pias.com

and i've revamped the links page too, removing a stack of dead sites. additions welcome.

mojo always reads chunklet, the athens ga laugh-riot indie-rock mag. this month they release a dvd entitled 'buckshot boys', where chunklet proprietor henry h owings and his provocative friend brian teasley adopt the personas of alabama hunting enthusiasts. then they go to 2005's all tomorrows parties indie blow-out in order to mercilessly torment attendees and bands including the melvins, mogwai and spoon. see http://www.chunklet.com/ for info.

    zidane soundtrack, mega download 13/02/06

    from today's press release:

    zinedine zidane film soundtrack

mogwai are currently working on a film score for "zidane; a 21st century portrait", directed by fellow glaswegian douglas gordon and french artist philippe parreno. the film is a real-time, 90 minute portrait of zinedine zidane, celebrated french footballer and accidental hero to football fans worldwide. through discussions between the band and the directors, we should look forward to a unique collaboration of sound and image, coming soon, to a cinema near you.

update - more from the evening times website:

mogwai have signed up to provide their trademark wall of sound for the movie about the french football genius. the film, zidane: a 21st century portrait, is co-directed by glaswegian douglas gordon. it is currently in post-production, and is a portrait of the gifted midfielder after 15 cameras followed him for an entire game. it is entirely filmed from the perspective of the real player and tells the story of a match between real madrid and villarreal in april last year. the documentary is being directed by turner prize winner gordon in collaboration with the french artist philippe parreno. the zidane movie includes shots from two high-definition zoom cameras usually only used by the us military.

film bosses today described the movie as "halfway between a sports documentary and conceptual art installation". mogwai are currently in the studio fine-tuning the soundtrack. stuart said: "we were asked to contribute music to the film by douglas. we are recording new music at the moment at our castle of doom studio in glasgow and the film is going to premiere at cannes in may. zidane has been personally involved in the project. the film makers were nervous france wouldn't qualify for the world cup as the film is being released to coincide with the finals."

and he joked: "our initial fee for the project was for zidane to play for celtic for a year, but it didn't quite work out."

in further news - a version of 'glasgow mega-snake', recorded during the ica gigs in january, will be available to download from monday 20th february. and the royal albert hall show in september is close to selling out - get your skates on, folks, that one has got to be unmissable?

dear friends in the rock and roll business (and humans, too). the following members of matador's cavalcade of stars will be appearing at austin, texas' stubbs bbq on wednesday evening, march 15 as part of the eagerly awaited south by southwest trade fair.

no good news on standing tickets i'm afraid. just booked my sitting tix over the phone and asked about standing. the lady at royal albert hall said they were all sold out but it is possible to upgrade to standing on the day of the gig should any become available as returns. should have booked mine earlier!

i did a quick search of a few other ticket websites and none of them seemed to have standing either.

    one 18/01/06

it seems that mogwai's triptych festival show in edinburgh on 27th april may not be followed by dates in glasgow and aberdeen (the festival has three legs - edinburgh, glasgow, aberdeen - for those unfamiliar with past events). the festival mailout today describes the edinburgh date as a "one off".

tickets for the edinburgh show are available from the mogwai online store, amongst other places.

    motel 17/01/06

mogwai have been added to the line-up of the motel mozaique festival in rotterdam, which runs from 14th-16th april. as mogwai already have shows on 15th and 16th, we're presuming they're playing 14th.

    thanks, jean-paul.

    beast on dvd 16/01/06

today's press release about the uk shows also confirms the limited cd/dvd package for 'mr beast':

    "mr beast" (pias recordings)
    cd (piasx062cd) ltd. edition cd/dvd (piasx062cdltd) lp (piasx062dlp)

mogwai release new studio album on 6th march ‘06
single 'friend of the night' released 30th january

since their formation in 1995, mogwai have become one of the uk’s most respected and vital bands. while many others have come and gone, mogwai have operated under the mainstream radar, happy in their outsiders status. their unwavering self-belief and ever evolving sound has accompanied their rise from humble beginnings in glasgow to world-wide notoriety as one of the greatest guitar bands of our time.

in march 2006, mogwai will release their 5th studio album 'mr beast', the follow-up to 2003’s 'happy songs for happy people'. it was recorded in the band’s new castle of doom studio in glasgow between april and october 2005 with producer tony doogan. as the title suggests, this is a record of considerable size and weight - a monster creation that started out as a return to the heady, bone-crushing volume and intensity of earlier recordings, and then mutated into a many headed, many mooded beast. here we find the ominous death-toll of opener 'auto rock' followed by the head-crushing army of guitars that is 'glasgow mega-snake', alongside the contrasting neo-classical piano passages of single 'friend of the night' and the beautiful melancholy of 'i chose horses' which features tetsuya fukagawa of japanese hardcore band envy on vocals and a keyboard contribution from composer/arranger craig armstrong.

since the release of 'happy songs...', mogwai have toured the states on the curiosa tour, at the request of robert smith, played all tomorrow’s parties at the request of slint and played dates in japan and china. in january ‘05 they released a compilation of bbc live recordings spanning 1996-2003 from john peel and steve lamacq sessions. mogwai continue to spin a fine line in remixes and have more recently reworked tracks by boom bip, bloc party, earth, engineers and kid 606.

a special limited edition cd of the album will include a dvd with a documentary - 'the recording of mr beast'

not directly related, but apparently the tickets for next saturday's moscow show have "to be filmed for a live dvd" on them, and some filming was taking place at the ica last week.

in addition to this, regular music has tickets for a show at queens hall, edinburgh on 27th april, as part of the triptych festival - does this mean that dates in aberdeen and glasgow will be announced soon? thanks, jim.

the effort that's gone into finding out booking fees can only be applauded. on a personal note, i have had many pleasant buying experiences with ticketweb. the same cannot be said for seetickets - it's worth noting that, in addition to their £1.75 per ticket booking fee, their postage charges are excessive. i'd also like to encourage our midlands readers to buy their tickets for the wolverhampton show from swordfish.
