crippled black phoenix 30/07/06

from http://www.myspace.com/crippledblackphoenix:

back in the summer of 2004, electric wizard drummer justin greaves (also of iron monkey, teeth of lions rule the divine) started recordings songs and soundscapes he'd had in his head for several years onto minidiscs, looping them through an old stereo to achieve the multi-layers, these were the bones of what would eventually become the international outfit that is cbp. the songs that marked that moment in time would take on a new strength, initially aided by good friend (and mogwai bassist) dominic aitchison. other great compadres followed, panthiest members andy semmens and kostas panagiotou, nial mcgoughey of 3d house of beef and -(16)- amongst others and solo folk singer-songwriter joe volk, who also fronts heavy rock band gonga, all stepped up to bring a variety of influences and skills to complete the line-up.

bringing us up to date in 2006, cbp enter soa studio (portishead, gonga, the heads etc..) in bristol, uk, to record the debut full-length album "a love of shared disasters", a collection of self-penned "endtime ballads".

"a love of shared disasters" is to see its release through invada records (owned and run by geoff barrow of portishead) and will see the band enter into the live on stage phase, playing shows in selected cities, bringing the public the melodic-but-twisted carnival that is crippled black phoenix.

at present we're unsure of dominic's involvement in the album and future live shows - further info to follow.

update - thanks, dominic:

the principal recording of the album has been done bar the bass, which i'll be doing towards the end of august. all the songs were written by justin greaves. we do plan to play some shows.

    chem087 10/06/06

    from chemikal underground:

    chemikal underground compilation no.2
a long time in the making, our 2nd compilation album (after 2003's "out of our heads on skelp") is not only close to release, we've only gone and included a fucking dvd with it as well.

yes, to celebrate the fact it's been 11.25 years since our first release, we've put together a double-dunter of a cd featuring 17 tracks from all of our artists past and present and a dvd featuring a barrel-load (28 to be precise) of promo videos that most of you will have never seen before. and do you know what else? it shouldn't cost you much more than a tenner! fucking take that.....

the cd compilation features one track per artist (including those who contributed to our fukd id series of releases) and includes an exclusive track from the mighty interpol (who we released before anyone else, but who's boasting). the dvd not only includes extremely rare promos of the delgados, mogwai, arab strap, radar bros. and aereogramme, we've also filmed an exclusive introduction by erstwhile delgados and full time chemikal magnates paul, emma, alun and stewart.

    chem087cd track listing includes mogwai's 'year 2000 non-compliant cardia'.
chem087dvd track listing includes mogwai's 'xmas steps' and 'stanley kubrick' videos.

    read more here: http://www.chemikal.co.uk/news/Compilation2.html

release date to be announced soon.

    zidane review 30/05/06

the guardian reviews 'zidane, un portrait du xxième siècle' in their cannes round-up:

douglas gordon's gloriously funny and audacious 'zidane: a 21st-century portrait', following the footballer over 90 minutes, was the most purely enjoyable event at the festival. zidane is the best sports movie i have ever seen and a wonderful film that brilliantly marries up a daringly experimental style with a popular subject. it had bespectacled cineastes crying out: "zizou!" i can't wait to see it again when it comes out here.

    thanks mark.

    autumn touring plans 2 27/05/06

as we reported a couple of weeks, mogwai will be undertaking their third us tour of 2006 in november.

    1997 gigography addition 27/05/06

thanks to matt johnson for contacting us with some info on a mogwai show he saw in new london, conneticut in october 1997 - i've added this to the 1997 gigography.

a google search on this info threw up an interview with temple of sting zine, in which a show at brownies in new york around the same time is mentioned, with support from snow patrol. the interview's worth a read too - it dates from 1998, and even then stuart and barry express their distaste for people having sex to mogwai's music.

brightlight has been getting a huge amount of traffic this year. if anyone reading this has attended a mogwai show and can't find any info in the gigography, please get in touch!

    the fountain 23/05/06

discussion on the imdb.com messageboard for darren aronofsky's forthcoming film 'the fountain' suggests that the soundtrack has been composed by clint mansell and performed by kronos quartet and mogwai.

a friend who attended the test screening saw that both groups' names are on the end credits as the performers of the music.

if confirmed, this would tie up a few loose ends - the mention of working with clint mansell by barry in a recent interview, the mooted collaboration with kronos quartet a couple of years ago, the recording sessions in december and february...very exciting...

the film stars hugh jackman and rachel weisz, and is apparently due for release in october. a number of test screenings have taken place in the us.

zidane, un portrait du xxième siècle 23/05/06

after screening at the cannes film festival last week, 'zidane, un portrait du xxième siècle' hits french cinemas tomorrow (weds 24th may).

at present, we're struggling to get answers to two questions:
will the film be released outside france?
will the previously-unreleased mogwai recordings featured on the score be released?

update: dominic suggests (in a soon-to-be published interview with millefeuille online zine) that some of the zidane score will be released as an ep. thanks eric.

les voix du gaou cancelled? 20/05/06

mogwai were scheduled to headline the festival les voix du gaou in six-fours, france on 20th july, but the festival website now lists rinocerose as headliners - "désistement de mogwaï" presuambly means cancellation? if anyone can clarify the situation it'd be useful - will ticket refunds be available?

update: the show has been cancelled, refunds from the point of purchase. thanks gaël and jérôme.

this cancellation lends more weight to our report last week that mogwai will be touring australia in july.

    'travel is dangerous' video 20/05/06

hornet inc have made an animated video to accompany the 'travel is dangerous' ep, due for release by pias on 26th june. the video can be seen by following the link above. thanks steve.

    more movies? 03/05/06

from http://www.thestereoeffect.com, interviewing barry back in february:

we're going to be doing some film stuff. we've been asked to do an art installation but it's going to go into cinemas as well. there's a possibility of a film on zidane, like a portrait of him, and we've been asked to do a film with clint mansell (pop will eat itself). i'm excited about doing things like that, new things. we've never done a soundtrack and i think it's pretty obvious that the music we do lends itself to the cinema.

    intriguing. thanks steve.

rah sold out, more on zidane movie 03/05/06

today's mogwai press release suggests that the royal albert hall show on 22nd september has sold out.

    additionally:

prior to the world cup, on 24th may "zidane", a portrait of the french footballer by scottish film director douglas gordon, will be shown in france in over 300 cinemas while also being showcased as an out-of-competition 'official selection' at cannes film festival between 17th and 27th may. the film is sound-tracked by a tailor-made score the fitba loving glaswegians recorded in their castle of doom studio over christmas. preview screenings have been very warmly received. trailers viewable at:
    http://www.uipfrance.com/sites/zidane/ba.html
    http://zidanelefilm.cine.wanadoo.fr

there's also one further confirmed european tour date for the summer - 1st july at tollhaus, karlsruhe (germany)

update - in a recent interview with http://www.soundofviolence.net, stuart says that some new songs were recorded for the 'zidane' soundtrack. and there's a second teaser here:

    'travel is dangerous' ep 02/05/06

further to our news item last week:
mogwai release a new ep on 26th june. the lead track will be 'travel is dangerous' from 'mr. beast', alongside live tracks from the recent shows in toyko, and remixes by errors and acid casuals.

    update - from pitchfork:

    tracklist:
    01 travel is dangerous
02 friend of the night (acid casuals mix)
    03 auto rock (errors mix)
    04 like herod (live)
    05 we're no here (live)

as with the 'friend of the night' single, there appear to be no plans for the ep to be released outside europe.

update 2 - the ep will be released on cd and 12" vinyl.

in addition, http://www.tigerbeat6.com confirms that kid606 is currently working on a mogwai remix, but no release plans have been announced yet.

    zidane 16/04/06

mogwai recently completed work on a film score for "zidane; a 21st century portrait", directed by fellow glaswegian douglas gordon and french artist philippe parreno. the film is due for release in may, and a short trailer can be found here:
    http://www.uipfrance.com/sites/zidane/

    further info from imdb.com:

halfway between a sports documentary and an conceptual art installation, "zidane" consists in a full-length soccer game (real madrid vs. villareal, april 23, 2005) entirely filmed from the perspective of soccer superstar zinedine zidane.

the film is due for release on 24th or 31st may 2006. there is currently no word on a soundtrack release.

thanks to various forum contributors - read the thread here

    update:

a minute-long trailer (including 30 seconds of previously-unreleased mogwai music) can be found here:
    http://zidanelefilm.cine.wanadoo.fr/
both trailers feature the surgeon remix of 'mogwai fear satan'

    update 2:

    albert hall supports 08/04/06

the current (apparently well-founded) rumour suggests that the support acts for mogwai's show at the royal albert hall on 22nd september will be shellac and envy.

ticket availability for this show appears to be extremely limited.

update - the rumour has no foundation. from stuart:

    we haven't asked anyone yet.
